Avoid Winter Boredom by Utilizing Your Community Resources

Avoid Winter Boredom

Winter is tough to keep the kids occupied when the weather doesn't cooperate. Turning to your local community resources can be a great way to keep everyone's mind sharp and bodies active, and away from the electronics. Resources available will vary according to your community, but here are a few helpful tips that may spark some ideas that work with in your community.

Avoid boredom this winter by utilizing your local community resources

1. Library
Most communities have a library, but many locals aren't really sure what to do there. Chances are, your library offers more than just shelves of books (and shelves of books are good, too!). Here are some tips for making use of your local library:

  • Go in with a book list, or a topic you'd like to research. Then ask a librarian for help if you need it. Going in with a plan tends to work better than just going and browsing, although that can be fun for young children.
  • Get a schedule from your library. They may have a printed calendar, a schedule of events online, or both. Then look ahead and schedule in what events you'd like to attend with your kids. Depending on your library, they may offer plays, reading activities, book sales, crafts, and other activities like LEGOs.

2. YMCA/YWCA/Rec Center
Do you have a "Y" or Rec Centerin your area? These organizations offer many fun and fitness-oriented activities for kids as well as teens. If you can't take off of work during your kids' off days, check with your local Y about childcare. Here is a sample of some of the programs you might find at your local Y or Rec Center:

  • Swim team and swimming lessons year-round
  • Sports lessons such as tennis, raquetball, indoor soccer, and others
  • Group activities, such as hiking and biking events
  • Physical education for homeschoolers
  • Yoga, Pilates, and other specialized classes
  • Weights and exercise equipment

3. What's Going on in Your Community?
Find out what's happening near you. Check your local newspaper and your city's newspaper. Another good way to stay informed is by radio or the community Facebook page. Local stations as well as their Facebook pages keep listeners and readers updated about festivals and events. Many of them are free, too!

4. Discover Local Businesses
Have you ever been to your local coffee shop, tea room, book store, consignment shop, or new restaurant? Take some time to discover a new place. For instance, my community has a great "paint your own ceramics" studio that the kids love. The winter is the perfect time to explore indoor fun. You may find a new family favorite!

5. Movies
Check with your local movie theatre for weekly specials. They often play older movies for a discounted price and even have a deal on popcorn!

What do you do to keep the family active during the cold winter months?

12 Healthiest Grocery Store Breakfast Foods

By now we all know that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. While some people out there still skip it (tsk! tsk!), there are others that want to make sure they are eating the best breakfast foods they can to start their day. When you eat a healthy breakfast, you are mentally setting up the rest of your day to continue eating healthy. At least that is how it works for me!

So what are the best breakfast foods you can eat? For years now, I have been relying on the Eat This, Not That books by David Zinczenko and Mark Goulding. David Zinczenko is the editor-in-chief of Men’s Health magazine and Mark Goulding is the contributing food and nutrition editor of Men’s Health.

The reason I like these books is because they don't just focus on fat and calories like so many other books out there. They also focus on sodium, protein, fiber, and complex carbs.
